Exploring the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Puerto Rico, Adriana Garriga-Lopez, PhD, questioned how colonialism manifests on an every day level.
Adriana Garriga-Lopez, PhD, Kalamazoo College continued the discussion at the 20th United States Conference on AIDS by explaining that her Puerto Rican heritage inspired her to learn as much as she could about her birthplace and explore the very human easpects of the epidemic. "Puerto Rico's situation is emblematic of these different zones of attenuated sovereignty where people are not democratically and fairly participate in the distribution of community resources," Garriga-Lopez said. Her research showed her the ins and outs of funding issues, which can be a step in the right direction of action.
