Author(s):

A conversation on advancements in diabetes, the rising cost of insulin, and advice regarding disease management.

In a new interview with HCPLive, Anne Marie van Hoven, MD, Internal Medicine Clerkship Director, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine breaks down new developments in diabetes as well as the importance of patient-specific care.

van Hoven discussed the explosion of pharmacological agents in the past two decades and the multidiscplinary area in which these medicines become vital for this patient population.

She further highlighted the new techologies that have reshaped patient care in diabetes, including continous glucose monitoring and how this instant data allows physicians to analyze the findings in real-time.

Additionally, van Hoven touched on the rising costs of insulin and issues with access and how they prove to be barriers in care.

"There definitely has to be some change," she said. "And I don't know, it's not looking good at the moment, but there definitely needs to be some change for a cap on insulin prices."

Lastly, van Hoven offered up insight into patients who may be having issues with their disease management and advice for clinicians who are treating this population.

"The key to the management of diabetes is exercise and weight loss and really, you know, devoting yourself to a healthier lifestyle," she added.
