Back-to-school season is officially upon the US, as summer heat waves are gradually subsiding and giving way to the mid-August tradition of fall clothes shopping, classroom orientations and the return of routine for students.
Perhaps understated in the annual preparation stage for the first September school bell is the tradition of health planning for many at-risk children. At a time when pediatric allergy and asthma rates are continually rising, there’s plenty of conference between caregivers, pediatricians and school nurses regarding rescue medication, as well as how to avoid seasonal and environmental risks for children this school year.
Asthma and allergic triggers are only scratching the surface of what should be discussed with caregivers leading into the school year, though.
For the August 2024 episode of Lungcast, a pair of allergic and pulmonary disease experts join to provide a blueprint of back-to-school health strategies for children and their parents. Juanita Mora, MD, physician and chief executive officer of the Chicago Allergy Center, and S. Christy Sadreameli, assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, review asthma, vaping, vaccines and more.
Throughout their half-hour conversation, Mora and Sadreameli touch on strategic conversations surrounding pediatric asthma control, immunization updates and collaborative care with school nurses. The duo also delve into trends in pediatric health that may affect classrooms, including Asthma Peak Week, poor indoor air quality, and the e-cigarette epidemic among young Americans.
Lungcast is a monthly respiratory news podcast series hosted by Albert Rizzo, MD, chief medical officer of the ALA, and produced by HCPLive.
