Can Simvastatin Prevent Delirium in Ventilated Patients?

Author(s):

Valerie Page, MB, BCh, FRCA, recounts a study of simvastatin on delirium patients.

Although trials showed that patients treated with simvastatin did not experience fewer days with delirium than patients treated with placebo, Valerie Page, MB, BCh, FRCA, is encouraged that the study's results might open doors to new, non-pharmacological methods of treating delirium.

"I don't believe that there's a pharmacological intervention that's going to help with delirium. But there are lots of clinicians and researchers who think there are, and I wish them the best luck in the world," Page said.
