In recent years, diabetes care teams and patients alike have been the recipients of a historic onslaught of breakthroughs and revelations. So much so, that members of the team have now been tasked with learning and applying what would amount to a lifetime’s worth of medical advances for most other diseases in less than a decade.
This task is made even more daunting considering the same providers, who are already outnumbered by the number of patients with diabetes by a substantial degree, are being asked to do so in the wake of both a diabetes epidemic and an obesity epidemic. With all these obstacles, the role of diabetes educators has become more integral than ever.
In this special edition episode of Diabetes Dialogue: Therapeutics, Technology, & Real-World Perspectives, hosts Diana Isaacs, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, BCACP, CDCES, FADCES, FCCP, and Natalie Bellini, DNP, FNP-BC, are joined by Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE, owner and clinical director of Integrated Diabetes Services. Author of multiple books, including Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin, and former Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists’ Diabetes Educator of the Year, Scheiner’s business and passion are one and the same in that they are focused on optimizing clinical application of the latest advances for the benefit of patients with diabetes.
In their conversation, which was recorded at the American Diabetes Association 82nd Scientific Sessions, Isaacs and Bellini take a deep dive into the largest diabetes meeting of the year from Scheiner’s perspective.
