Disease State Series: Clinically Relevant Reviews for Thyroid Disorders

As part of our thyroid disorders installment of the Disease State Series, we have created a list of clinically relevant reviews related to the management of thyroid disorders. Our list includes reviews examining hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid eye disease, and thyroid management during pregnancy.

  1. Hypothyroidism

This seminar, published in The Lancet, was created by a group of 4 authors to not only define hypothyroidism, but provide clinicians with diagnosis and treatment strategies to improve management of hypothyroidism. With more than 140 references, the work discusses the epistemology, causes, and symptoms of hypothyroidism as well as summarizing available evidence on diagnosis, long-term risk, and future research needs.

  2. Subclinical Hyperthyroidism

In this New England Journal of Medicine review, a pair of authors use a case report as an example to demonstrate management of subclinical hyperthyroidism in a patient using contemporary data and guideline recommendations. Within their review article, authors provide insight into causes, potential consequences, strategies for treatment, and evidence related to guideline-directed management recommendations.

  3. Thyroid disease in pregnancy: new insights in diagnosis and clinical management

Although clinicians are anxiously awaiting new guidance from major organizations for thyroid management during pregnancy, understanding the latest data and standards of care can have a substantial impact on quality of life and disease course. In this review, which was published in Nature Reviews Endocrinology in 2017, a trio of authors provide an overview of contemporary data related to the management and diagnosis of thyroid disorders in pregnancy.

  4. Thyroid Eye Disease: Navigating the New Treatment Landscape

For decades, management of thyroid eye disease underwent little change as it relates to therapeutic options. Thanks to the approval of teprotumumab, the spectrum of care underwent a major shift. In this review, a pair of authors use 2 case reports as a springboard to address pathophysiology, clinical assessment, therapeutic approach, and potential future therapies for management of thyroid eye disease.

  5. Thyroid Disease in Pregnancy: A Descriptive Review of Guidelines

This CME article was written with the aim of reducing adverse obstetric, fetal, and neonatal outcomes that may arise as a result of delayed diagnosis or suboptimal management of thyroid disorders in pregnancy. This review, which was published in 2022, provides a comprehensive overview of guideline-directed management of thyroid disease in pregnancy from the standpoint of obstetricians, gynecologists, and PCP or internal medicine providers.
