Telehealth likely will have a major place in psychiatric care in the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of telehealth. However, no medical specialty is better suited for this future than psychiatry.

Psychiatrists for the last 3-plus years have really utilized telehealth principles to maintain care for patients with diseases like attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other psychiatric conditions.

But as the pandemic concludes, there will be a renewed push for more of a hybrid care program, where patients do visit offices, while also utilizing telehealth modalities.

In an interview with HCPLive®, Kyle Jones, PMHNP, Done ADHD, explained how effective telehealth has been moving forward and what is important in the future, not only to help patients, but also to help alleviate burnout within medical professionals.

“Psychiatry certainly lends itself well to telehealth care,” Jones said. “Patients were used to seeing us in person as well. Telehealth really exploded with the start of the pandemic.

However, Jones said there will be a push to in person meetings that the patients will ultimately enjoy.

“As we go back to it, I feel like patients are just going to feel like its normal,” he said.

Telehealth also has a place to stay in many states and will be utilized more in larger states like Texas, where patients have doctors that could potentially be several hours away.
