Kia Shahlaie: Surgery Can Help Movement Disorders Beyond Medicine

As new medications have been approved for movement disorders like Parkinson's Disease many patients have been able to better manage their symptoms. When that is not enough newer surgical options have also been developed in recent years.

Kia Shahlaie, MD, PhD, from UC Davis Health System did a second fellowship in movement disorders. This can include either the implanting of a device to help some conditions or removing tissue which can have a negative impact on a patients. Shahlaie said the procedures are not a cure for these conditions but can provide a considerable amount of help well beyond what pharmaceutical options can provide.
