Prince Rogers Nelson, the singer and musician who was well-known by just his first name, has passed away. There has been no official statement on the cause of his death, but there have been reports that he was ill with the flu.
Prince’s body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, MN on the morning of April 21. According to TMZ, “his people” told the website that the music icon had been battling the flu at his time of death.
His publicist announced the death around noon and officials in Caraver County said they are investigating the circumstances that led to it.
On April 15, Prince had left his concert in Atlanta and got on a private jet that resulted in an emergency landing in Illinois. The “When Doves Cry” singer performed at his concert the next day.
While it remains unclear if the emergency landing illness and the cause of death are related, TMZ says that a rep for the icon had been sick with the flu for weeks.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), although flu activity is starting to decrease, there are still regional outbreaks in 36 states, including Minnesota.
