There remains a need for more doctors that specialize in geriatrics.
With the population aging, the role of geriatricians might be expanding, especially after a 2 year global pandemic that has largely impacted the older population.
As Baby Boomers continue to hit senior age, there are many concerns over psychiatric problems, Alzheimer disease, and other diseases that might disproportionatelyotately impact older adults.
In an interview with HCPLive®, Lee A. Lindquist, MD, MPH, Chief of the Division of Geriatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, explained all the different facets that are needed to treat and care for the senior population.
For example, Lee said there is a need for more geriatric psychiatrics and geriatricians in general.
There also is a lot of concern over Alzheimer disease and whether we truly are on the verge of being able to treat the disease.
However, Lindquist, while hopeful for the future, does not hold much regard for the current stable of Alzheimer disease drugs.
In a presentation during Pri-Med West 2022 in Anaheim, Lindquist, discussed the need to deprescribe when possible, for the senior population and one of the most important aspects of this is better communication among specialists.
