"The disturbing fact is that unvaccinated children who get measles run the risk of these [SSPE] complications -- direct complications and then the later complications, and since measles vaccine doesn't cause autism and doesn't cause all kinds of other things it's blamed on, it's safety is very high," said Jim Cherry, MD, UCLA, at IDWeek 2016. While Cherry did touch upon the very minor complications reported with the vaccine, he underscored that more important work is preventing measles. Cherry shared, "Hopefully people who don't vaccinate their children will rethink it, because they're harming their children."
