Research has shown how important sleep can be for a person's health. For patients with insomnia every little bit helps and medications have been developed for this specific condition with some having more serious side effects than others.

Gerald Smetana, MD, from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center discussed suvorexant, also known as Belsomra during the American College of Physicans Internal Medicine meeting in Boston. Smetana said factors considered during trials was total sleep time and also how long it takes a patient to fall asleep on the medication. The total sleep time, he said was only 30 to 40 minutes more per night.
