San Antonio Highlights—River Walk and the Alamo

I went down to the River Walk today, and although I had been there before several years ago, I had forgotten how truly picturesque this is. When I got there, I ended up taking the Rio San Antonio Cruise, which was well worth the price—$7.75. I actually couldn’t get over how cheap this was; it was like winning the lottery to me—perhaps because I am used to paying exorbitant prices back in the Northeast. The tour lasts about 30 minutes and offers some great insights into the history of the Rio San Antonio and of the city itself. Plus, it is just plain relaxing and incredibly scenic—certainly great for unwinding after a long day of attending sessions. I just couldn’t stop snapping pictures along the way. River tours are available 7 days a week from the following locations: Rivercenter Mall (Commerce & Bowie), Historia (Market Street and Alamo), and Holiday Inn River Walk (on St. Mary’s). If you just enjoy riding along the Rio San Antonio and do not necessarily want a narrated tour, you can get onboard the Rio Taxi, which our tour guide told us you can hail down anytime along the river. Before heading back to my hotel, I stopped at the Alamo. There is no admission charge, though donation boxes are located throughout the grounds. I enjoyed seeing the various exhibits, but was especially interested in seeing Davy Crockett’s embroidered buckskin vest and a lock of his hair; personal possessions have always intrigued me more than metallic implements. I will try to go back again, as there is a lot to take in. While you may take pictures of the grounds, you are not permitted to take pictures inside any of the buildings, but don’t let this stop you from bringing your camera. There are many wonderful outdoor photo opportunities—I couldn’t help but take a picture of a big blooming cactus bush.
