For certain late stage cancer patients a specialized procedure called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can provide a "new lease on life," as a specialized treatment method.
Wilbur B. Bowne, MD, an associate professor at the Drexel University College of Medicine and the chief of gastrointestinal surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital discussed how HIPEC has changed the field and what it can mean for patient care. The procedure, which Bowne said is part of a multidisciplinary approach to care, is done immediately after patients undergo cytoreductive surgery to reduce any visible tumors.
