Former FDA Commissioner and CMS Administrator Mark McClellan to Give Keynote at ACO Coalition Fall Meeting

Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, who served as FDA Commissioner and CMS Administrator, will be the keynote speaker at the fall meeting of the ACO & Emerging Healthcare Delivery Coalition, presented by The American Journal of Managed Care. The meeting will be October 20-21, 2016, in Philadelphia.

As Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and other emerging delivery and payment models evolve and move away from traditional fee-for-service system models toward cost-effective and value-based care, the need to understand how these models will evolve is critical to building long-term strategic solutions.

Our sister publication, The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC), created and drives the ACO Coalition, which brings together a diverse group of key stakeholders, including ACO providers and leaders, payers, IDNs, retail and specialty pharmacy, academia, national quality organizations, patient advocacy, employers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers, to work collaboratively to build value and improve the quality and overall outcomes of patient care.

The 6th Live Meeting of the ACO & Emerging Healthcare Delivery Coalition will take place on October 20-21, 2016, in Philadelphia, PA. The event will offer unique perspectives from industry leaders as well as real world examples that address the vast array of issues relating to emerging delivery models.

Today, AJMC and the ACO Coalition announced that Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, will give the keynote address, “Reforming Medicare,” at the fall meeting of the ACO & Emerging Healthcare Delivery Coalition. AJMC will bring stakeholders from across healthcare to the Philadelphia Westin for the meeting. For information and to register, click here.

From the press release announcing this news:

A physician and economist, Dr. McClellan has a unique perspective on healthcare delivery system reform. His talk will cover both the challenges and possible solutions for meeting the needs the aging baby boomer generation. Dr. McClellan draws on his service as FDA Commissioner (2002-2004), and then Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (2004-2006) when the agency launched Medicare Part D, creating a new prescription drug benefit for America’s seniors.

A fellow of the Brookings Institution, Dr. McClellan was named the inaugural director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy in October 2015, and was appointed to the Robert J. Margolis, MD, Professor of Business, Medicine, and Health Policy. The center develops evidence-based solutions in three broad areas: healthcare delivery, biomedical innovation, and education and the workforce.

The agenda for the ACO Coalition features emergent topics in delivery system reform and nationally known innovators. Sessions will include:

  • A multi-stakeholder workshop featuring the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, which developed some of the first methods to track high healthcare utilization.
  • A two-part presentation for providers on implementing the Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA).
  • A panel in our Series 2020, featuring AJMC co-editors Michael Chernew, PhD, of Harvard; and A. Mark Fendrick, MD, of the University of Michigan and its Center for Value-Based Insurance Design.

“The ACO Coalition continues to attract the most important leaders in delivery system reform,” said Coalition and meeting chairman Anthony Slonim, MD, DrPH, who is president and CEO of Renown Health of Reno, Nevada. “What sets the Coalition apart, however, is the opportunity to learn both from experts and from the others attending the meeting.”

Dr. Slonim previously served as executive vice president and chief medical officer for Barnabas Health in New Jersey, which has now merged to become RWJBarnabas.
