As the risk of a stroke increases with age so does the importance of monitoring patients over the course of their later years. Finding the best ways to treat them as new medications are added to the field have made that job both easier and more complicated as individual cases are looked at on a daily basis.
Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, from the University of Miami Health System discussed this delicate area of treatment during the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting in Vancouver. While new anticoagulants have been introduced to help patients with conditions like nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, Warfarin remains the preferred treatment method for those with artificial valves.
