The new guidelines on management of hypertension in adults, developed by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, in collaboration with 9 other professional organizations, offer clinicians and patients alike an opportunity to help reduce the incidence, prevalance and public health impact of high blood pressure (BP) in the United States.
This short slide show provides a simple illustration of the revised guidelines' key principles: accurate BP measurement, a new BP classification system, a lower BP target value, a renewed emphasis on lifestyle modification during treatment, and incorporation of underlying cardiovascular risk into decisions on pharmacotherpay.
