Hypertension: Key coding considerations

Here are some key coding considerations when working with patients with hypertension and hypertension related symptoms.

One of the primary changes for coding for hypertension in the International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision (ICD-10) is that providers no longer will have to document whether the patient’s hypertension is benign or malignant.

Hypertension is a condition that can exist for years without any signs or symptoms. Below are the ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnosis codes for hypertension and associated conditions.
