Elbow Mass in a 52-Year-Old Man With RA
March 5th 2011A 52-year-old man with long-standing seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presented to our clinic with a mass on his left elbow (left). He had noticed it 2 years earlier-the mass had been painless, but it had gradually increased in size.
Moderate alcohol consumption may decrease risk of RA
March 4th 2011Alcohol consumption is associated with markers of inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) before symptoms occur. This association suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect of alcohol might be the link between moderate alcohol consumption and a possible decreased risk of RA.
Gait speed provides simple measure of survival in older patients
March 4th 2011Gait speed, known to be associated with survival in older adults, may be a simple and accessible indicator of health in these patients. Gait speed, age, and sex may offer clinicians tools for assessing expected survival to contribute to tailoring care goals in older patients.
Perceptions influence pain in juvenile idiopathic arthritis
March 4th 2011Pain beliefs in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) influence their longitudinal course of pain. Children who have higher pain perceptions but low disease activity levels consider themselves more disabled and damaged by their JIA and limit exercise more; these beliefs appear to be highly consistent over time.
Metabolic syndrome more prevalent in heart-healthy patients with RA
March 4th 2011Among patients who do not have cardiovascular disease (CVD), the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is higher in those who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) than in those who do not. Metabolic syndrome in RA is associated with greater disability and a history of large-joint swelling but not with RA therapy.
Physical activity linked with functional performance in knee osteoarthritis
March 4th 2011Greater levels of physical activity are significantly associated with higher functional performance objectively measured by gait speed in adults with confirmed radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). There is a consistent graded relationship between physical activity level and better performance in these patients.
