Malignancy, Infection Risk in Early RA May Not Increase With TNF-α Inhibitors
July 28th 2011In this meta-analysis, the risk of malignancy or serious infections was not increased in patients with a new diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who received tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) inhibitor therapy and had not received disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) or methotrexate (MTX). This finding runs contrary to the results of earlier meta-analyses.
DMARDs Reduce Diabetes Risk in RA and Psoriasis
July 28th 2011In patients who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or psoriasis, there is a reduced risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) with the use of a tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α)inhibitor or hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), but not with methotrexate (MTX), compared with other nonbiologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Evidence suggests a possible role for DMARDs and immunosuppression in DM prevention
Antibody Levels and Male Sex Associated With Lung Disease in RA
July 27th 2011High anti–cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibody levels are associated with lung disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Male sex is another independent risk factor for co-occurrence of active lung disease in RA.
Treadmill Walking Provides Safe, Effective Exercise for Obese Adults
July 27th 2011Walking at a slow speed up a moderate incline is an alternative exercise strategy for obese adults that may reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury and pathological disease associated with brisk, level walking and provide proper cardiovascular stimulus for weight management.
